We are almost 1 quarter through 2011, and guess how much fabric have I added to my stash so far?
2011 fabric stash
There you go! Just 3 miserable meters of fabrics from Ikea. I guess you can call it a fabric diet, but its really unintentional! Due to my work schedule, Benji’s health, holidays and family ‘events’, I really haven’t had time to sew much for myself or shop/surf my usual haunts as much I wanted to!
When we were at Ikea earlier in Feb, picking up some storage tubs for my boy’s bricks, I just had to buy SOMETHING for myself. Hence, this little bolt of black/white print (with red accent print).
I’m sure you have heard of the quake and tsunami devastation that have hit Japan and her beautiful people.
The crisis is utterly heart-breaking and everytime I read or watch the news, I get the goose-pimples (not the good ones). I really hope that the people who are affected by this horrible disaster will stay strong and pick up their lives from here. The amount of suffering they go through really put things into perspective for how we view the minor inconveniences in our own lives.
My 1st Japanese print quilt which I started about 2 years ago is finally done. The Japanese prints are from Konabay Robert Kaufman and a friend helped with the quilting, which I love. All 12 blocks which are all distinct, came from the same fabric print.
Benji turned 4 earlier this year. And for the very 1st time, we attempted a themed birthday party celebration.
We knew it would be all about Lego from the get-go as we have almost everything we need for a brick party!
The cake was a custom order from the wonderful people at The Pastissier. We did a mock up at home and took some pictures before we briefed the bakery. All minifigs were provided by us.
Happy New Year! (Still qualify for the greeting, I think :D)
Sorry I missed posting for the entire month of December. While the blog was left unattended, the sewing station was busy, busy, busy! No new/completed quilts to show for yet, but plenty of purses, pillow cases, baggies and also 1st-day-of-school sewing for Benji.
Benji - The Big Man
My Big Man started Nursery 2 on Tuesday (thanks to the papers for the reminder about the start of school date, if not we would have made that trip on 3 Jan!). This is our 1st drop-off school experience and the boy handled it so well. The teachers are very caring and loving. It helps that Benji’s class is very close to a generous playground with loads of exciting installations!
We waited for him outside his class on the 1st day, stepping in when the teachers were orientating the kids, etc. By the 2nd day, we left Benji in the good hands of the teachers and he gave his kisses and goodbyes like a champ at the door. Hubby & I are mighty proud of him!
A simple drawstring backpack
And the night before school, I put together a lined drawstring backpack that he can easily open/close by himself. The exterior fabric is Japanese cotton twill bought from our Tokyo trip and the lining is 100% cotton. For the cords, they were actually cording salvaged from old cushion covers that I deconstructed for drink coasters at home.
The next evening, I made a snack bag for him to hold his drink bottle, cutlery and cloth napkin. No pictures of that for now. But that’s another hit with my boy. 😀
Hope you had as great a start to this new year as we did. There’s so much to look forward to in this new year.
And I wish you good health, more wealth and definitely new fabrics & projects 😀
Thank you, all, for your comments and email about my fabric stash. It really just struck me that I have more pictures of my stash than actual projects! But hey, no worries… I will get to working with them ONE day 😉
I have also received a few emails from readers who love fabrics but don’t want to sew a stitch. Sure! For starters, I have started a Tutorial section and try out the super-easy fabric-covered mousepad instructions!
FREE FABRICS: Magdalene from Needle and Thread has a sweet deal for you. From now till 31 December 2010, she will give away one Fat Quarter for EVERY S$15 ordered from her store! NB: You have to include ‘Midnight Crafts‘ in the comment section when ordering. And NAT will pick the free FQ for you – no choosing for the free piece. The no-choice bit is no biggie because there are no ‘ugly’ fabrics in my dictionary. All prints will work out great depending on what you pair them with!
Disclaimer: I am not paid, compensated, or sponsored by any organisation. This promotion was suggested to give Midnight Crafts readers a chance to build up their stash and also to try out a simple handmade project.
